On a rainy day we arrived in Port Macquarie late in the
afternoon. Nate was eager to go to Woolies for grocery shopping and collect his
marvel disks. We took some food back to the apartment and stayed in that rainy
evening.
Saturday was beautiful day. We went downtown to visitor
information and met Trudy. After sharing our interest in travel, she recommended
the Koala hospital and Fynns Beach as must sees. Flynns beach was a hit as the
waves were excellent. We decided we had to buy some boogie boards for our time
along the coast. A few hours spent in the waves but we wanted to be at the
Koala hospital for 3:00 when the tours happen and the Koalas are being fed.
The Koala Hospital has permanent as well as temporary
patients. The name are interesting as the first names are the street or
location where they were found and the second name is what the person who found
the koala wants to name it. Surf David would be a name. Koalas are territorial
and need to be returned to their original location. If they are returned to a
different location they may put themselves in jeopardy as they relocate
themselves to their original residence.
Koalas are in abundance in this part of Australia. They will
only eat a certain type of eucalyptus. They need to live in areas where these
trees grow. Even a koala found dead on the side of a road should be reported as
the hospital workers have rescued the joeys that have survived inside their
mother’s pouch.
Sunday, Trudy had recommended the Laurieton market.
Laurieton is a small town about 30 minutes from Port Macquarie. We found a
couple of boogie boards on the way. The town of Laurieton may be small, but the
market is huge! Hundred of vendors selling local produce, crafts, clothing,
jewellery – along with entertainment and food vendors for every taste. The boys
spent their money on candy. I found mandarins, starfruit, lemons and jam.
With new boogie boards packed in the car the boys were eager
to get back to Flynn’s Beach to put them to use.
