Last Leg of the Great Ocean Road

April 27

The Twelve Apostles have eroded away over the years to being eight. They are beyond belief beautiful. This coastline is known as the shipwreck coast. Battling stormy ocean waters and fog, many ships met their end on these sandstone banks.

Not far down the road is Loch Ard Gorge so named after the ship the Loch Ard that set sail for Melbourne from England and crashed into the coast here in 1878. Of the 54 passengers only two survived. An 18 year old ship apprentice washed into the gorge where he heard someone crying. He went into the water and rescued and 18 year old girl. They slept the night in cave and in the morning were found by a farmer who helped them recuperate. The girl eventually went back to Ireland and the apprentice went on to become a sailor.  Tis is probably the most famous shipwreck in Australia's history. The gorge is probably my favourite stop.

The razorback is just around the corner from the gorge.

The end of the Great Ocean Road is Port Fairy.  This was an overnight for us with a hike of Griffith Island in the morning. Griffith Island has another historic lighthouse and lava rocks to collect.

Magpies are plentiful.

A very cute town.
